Understanding SHOCKWAVE THERAPY

What Exactly Is Shockwave Therapy?

You may have noticed a new treatment available at our clinic: Shockwave Therapy.

Despite the name, there are no electrical shocks involved.

Shockwave Therapy uses carefully controlled acoustic (sound) waves that are delivered into injured tissue.

These sound waves stimulate the body’s natural healing processes and are commonly used to treat persistent tendon and soft tissue conditions.

It’s a treatment that has become increasingly popular in physiotherapy, sports medicine and elite sport, particularly for injuries that have failed to improve with rest alone.

Our Expertise

What conditions can Shockwave therapy help with?

Shockwave Therapy is most commonly used for:

✓ Plantar fasciitis (heel pain)

✓ Achilles tendinopathy.

✓ Tennis elbow

✓ Golfer’s elbow

✓ Shoulder tendon pain

✓ Patellar tendinopathy (“jumper’s knee”)

✓ Gluteal tendon pain around the hip

Many of these conditions can become frustratingly persistent because tendons naturally heal more slowly than muscles..

Understanding Your Body

Why is pain good?

Pain is your body’s way of telling you that something is wrong. It is often caused by swelling of tissue, which creates pressure on nerves and leads to discomfort. This is important to know as pain is a useful mechanism to alert you to a problem, and stops you from damaging your body further.

It should always, therefore, be taken seriously. Pain can affect many areas of the body, but particularly the lower back, head, neck, joints and legs. It can result from injuries and arthritis, and can also manifest itself in the form of rheumatic pain and period pain.

Our physiotherapists are trained to identify the source of your pain and develop a targeted treatment plan to address both the symptoms and the underlying cause.

What does a shockwave treatment feel like?

Most patients describe the sensation as a series of rapid pulses or taps over the affected area.

Treatment sessions are relatively quick, usually lasting only a few minutes once the area has been assessed and located.

Some discomfort during treatment is normal, especially when treating long-standing tendon problems, but the intensity can be adjusted to suit the individual.

Is Shockwave Therapy a magic fix?

No.

Like most effective healthcare treatments, Shockwave Therapy works best as part of a broader rehabilitation programme.

At our clinic, physiotherapist Susana Tous combines Shockwave Therapy with a thorough assessment, hands-on treatment and personalised rehabilitation exercises where appropriate.

The aim is not simply to reduce symptoms, but to help address the factors that contributed to the problem in the first place.

    RETURN TO COMPETITIVE PLAY

If you’ve been dealing with tendon pain for several months, have tried resting without lasting improvement, or find that symptoms keep returning when you become active again, it may be worth discussing whether Shockwave Therapy is suitable for you.

Every patient is different, and not every condition is appropriate for Shockwave Therapy, which is why an assessment is always the first step.

Our physiotherapist, Susana Tous, uses Shockwave Therapy as part of her evidence-based approach to treating persistent tendon and soft tissue injuries.

Whether you’re a runner, gym-goer, office worker, or simply struggling with pain that’s preventing you from enjoying everyday life, Susana can help determine the most appropriate treatment plan for your situation.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Physiotherapy

Can Shockwave Therapy help if I've already tried physiotherapy, massage or osteopathy?

Possibly. Some persistent tendon conditions require a combination of approaches. Shockwave Therapy is often considered when symptoms have not improved as expected with exercise, hands-on treatment or activity modification alone. During your assessment, we’ll discuss what you’ve already tried and whether Shockwave Therapy may be an appropriate addition to your treatment plan.

What should I do after a Shockwave Therapy session?

Most patients can return to their normal daily activities immediately afterwards. Depending on your condition, your physiotherapist may advise temporary modifications to exercise, running or gym training to give the treated tissue the best opportunity to recover and adapt.

What makes Shockwave Therapy different from massage or hands-on treatment?

Massage and hands-on therapy can help improve movement, reduce muscle tension and relieve symptoms.
Shockwave Therapy works differently, targeting specific injured tissues, particularly tendons, with acoustic waves designed to stimulate the body’s healing response. In many cases, the best results come from combining several approaches rather than relying on a single treatment alone.

I've had this problem for over a year. Is it too late?

Not necessarily. Many people seek treatment only after trying to manage symptoms for months or even years. While long-standing conditions can sometimes take longer to improve, they can still respond well to the right combination of treatment, rehabilitation and activity advice.

How quickly will I notice results?

Every condition and patient is different, but many people notice changes over the course of a treatment programme rather than after a single session. Tendon problems often develop gradually and can take time to settle, so it’s important to have realistic expectations and follow any exercise or rehabilitation advice provided.

Is Shockwave Therapy safe?

Shockwave Therapy is a well-established treatment that has been used in physiotherapy and sports medicine for many years. Before any treatment begins, your physiotherapist will take a detailed history and assessment to ensure it is appropriate for your condition and circumstances.

Do I need a scan or referral before starting Shockwave Therapy?

Not usually. In most cases, an assessment with a physiotherapist is the first step. Following your examination, we can determine whether Shockwave Therapy is likely to be beneficial or whether another treatment approach may be more suitable.

Is Shockwave Therapy only for athletes?

Not at all. While many elite athletes use Shockwave Therapy, it can benefit anyone struggling with persistent tendon pain. Many of our patients are office workers, busy professionals, walkers, gym-goers and recreational runners who simply want to get back to enjoying life without pain.
