What is Osteopathy?
Hands-on therapy that gets to the root of your pain
Osteopathy is a manual therapy that uses a mixture of techniques – including gentle joint adjustments that make a little audible pop – to restore your body’s natural function and mobility.
People of all ages visit our osteopaths for complaints ranging from sports injuries and work-related aches to arthritis, sciatica and migraines. The beauty of osteopathy lies in its whole-body approach: we don’t just treat symptoms, we find out why they’re happening in the first place.
Many of our patients feel immediate relief after their first session, though more than one treatment is often needed for lasting results. We’ll always be honest with you about what to expect.
Back Pain Stops Here
Our osteopaths are trusted by Olympic Champions and elite athletes from around the world. Whether you’re a professional sportsperson or someone struggling to get through the working day, you’ll receive the same exceptional standard of care.
Our Approach
Three Principles That Guide Every Treatment
When you visit our osteopaths in Central London, your treatment is built on these fundamental principles:
Your Body is a Whole
We don’t treat isolated symptoms. Pain in your shoulder might stem from your lower back; a headache could be rooted in neck tension. We look at the complete picture.
Structure Affects Function
The way your body is built directly impacts how it works. By improving your structure – aligning joints, releasing muscles – we help everything function better.
Your Body Can Heal Itself
Given the right conditions, your body has remarkable healing abilities. Our job is to remove the barriers and create an environment where natural recovery can happen.
Meet James.
He went from struggling to walk to running his first 10K.
REDUCED PAIN LEVELS
From constant 8/10 to occasional 2/10
MOBILITY IMPROVEMENT
Full range of movement restored
MEDICATION
No longer needs daily painkillers
How it started
James came to us after months of debilitating lower back pain. He’d tried everything – his GP, two rounds of physio, even considered surgery. The pain had spread to his leg, and some mornings he couldn’t stand upright for the first hour. His commute to work in the City had become torture, and he’d given up his weekend football entirely. “I felt like I’d aged twenty years overnight,” he told us at his first appointment.
How it’s going
Our assessment revealed that James’s sacroiliac joint was significantly restricted – something the scans had missed. After six sessions over two months, the transformation was remarkable. The sciatic pain disappeared completely, and his mobility came back piece by piece. We gave him specific stretches to maintain his progress, and he’s stuck with them religiously. Last month he ran his first 10K since his twenties. “I wish I’d found this place years ago,” he says now. That’s the outcome we work towards with every patient.

Finding the Right Osteopath
How Do I Find the Best Osteopath in London?
You might have a friend who’s had good experiences with their osteopath – and if you’re looking for an osteopath in London, this is often the most reliable way to find one.
Social media and online reviews are also good indicators. We have around four hundred 5-star reviews on Google, all from genuinely happy patients who are happy to recommend our osteopaths. We don’t offer any incentives for nice reviews – we simply strive very hard to maintain a high level of osteopathic care.
What matters most is finding someone who listens, takes the time to understand your specific situation, and explains what they’re doing and why. That’s what we aim for with every patient who walks through our door.
Why Choose Us?
Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions About Osteopathy
What happens during my first osteopathy appointment?
Your first appointment typically lasts 45-60 minutes. We’ll start by taking a detailed history of your problem, your general health, and any relevant medical background. Then we’ll carry out a physical examination – this might involve asking you to move in certain ways, checking your posture, and palpating (feeling) the affected areas. Based on this assessment, we’ll explain what we think is causing your symptoms and discuss the best approach to treatment. Most people receive hands-on treatment in their first session.
Does osteopathy hurt?
Osteopathic treatment shouldn’t be painful, though you might experience some discomfort when we work on areas that are already sore or tight. The adjustments we use – the quick, gentle joint releases that sometimes make a popping sound – are generally painless. If you’re nervous about any particular technique, just let us know. We can always use gentler approaches. Some patients feel a bit achy for a day or two after treatment, similar to how you might feel after exercise. This is normal and usually settles quickly.
How many sessions will I need?
This varies enormously depending on your condition, how long you’ve had it, and how your body responds to treatment. Some acute problems resolve in just one or two sessions. Longer-standing issues typically require a course of treatment – perhaps 4-6 sessions over several weeks. We’ll give you an honest estimate at your first appointment and review progress as we go. We’re not in the business of keeping you coming back unnecessarily.
What's the difference between an osteopath, a chiropractor and a physiotherapist?
All three professions treat musculoskeletal problems, but the approaches differ. Osteopaths take a whole-body approach, looking at how different parts of your body interact and using a variety of manual techniques including soft tissue work, stretching, and joint manipulation. Chiropractors tend to focus more specifically on spinal alignment and adjustments. Physiotherapists often emphasise exercise-based rehabilitation and may use equipment or machines. In practice, there’s considerable overlap, and the best practitioner for you depends on your specific problem and preferences.
Is osteopathy covered by health insurance?
Most of our osteopaths are registered with the major health insurance companies. However, coverage varies between insurers and policies. We recommend checking with your insurer before booking to confirm what’s covered. Some policies require a GP referral, others don’t. We can provide receipts and any documentation you need for claiming.
Can osteopaths treat babies and children?
Absolutely. Several of our osteopaths have specialist training in paediatric care. We often see babies with colic, feeding difficulties, or unsettled sleep, as well as older children with growing pains, sports injuries, or postural problems. The techniques used for children are very gentle – cranial osteopathy is particularly well-suited to young patients. Parents are welcome to stay in the room throughout treatment.
Do I need a GP referral to see an osteopath?
No, you can book directly with us without a referral. Osteopaths are primary healthcare practitioners, which means we’re trained to assess, diagnose and treat patients independently. However, if we think you need further investigation or your condition falls outside our scope of practice, we’ll recommend you see your GP or another specialist.
