What Is Reflexology?

More than a foot rub

Let’s clear something up straight away: reflexology isn’t just a fancy foot massage (though your feet will feel brilliant afterwards). It’s based on the principle that specific points on your feet – and sometimes hands and ears – correspond to different organs and systems throughout your body.

Think of it as a map of your entire body projected onto your feet. By applying precise pressure to these reflex points, a skilled reflexologist can influence corresponding areas elsewhere. Sounds a bit mad, doesn’t it? Yet people have been doing this for thousands of years across various cultures, and it keeps working.

The idea is to stimulate your body’s own healing mechanisms – getting energy flowing properly again, reducing tension, improving circulation, helping your nervous system calm down. It’s holistic in the truest sense: we’re not just treating symptoms, we’re working with your whole system.

And yes, it does feel incredibly relaxing. Most people drift off during treatment. Some even snore (we won’t tell).

Benefits of Reflexology

Why people keep coming back

The list of conditions reflexology might help with reads like a medical encyclopaedia. We’re talking everything from digestive issues to anxiety to chronic pain. Here’s what brings most people through our door.

Stress & Anxiety Relief

This is the big one. Reflexology triggers deep relaxation, helping your nervous system shift from fight-or-flight to rest-and-digest mode. Clients often describe feeling calm for days afterwards.

Pain Management

Chronic pain – headaches, back pain, arthritis – often improves with regular reflexology. By stimulating reflex points, we can help reduce pain perception and improve mobility.

Better Sleep

Can’t switch off at night? Reflexology helps regulate sleep patterns by calming your nervous system. Many clients report their best night’s sleep in years after treatment.

Meet Carol.

She’d been on sleeping pills for a decade. Six reflexology sessions later, she sleeps naturally.

How it started

Carol came to us after a decade of sleep problems. A high-stress job in finance had wrecked her sleep patterns years ago, and she’d been on zopiclone ever since. She’d tried everything – sleep hygiene, CBT, meditation apps, chamomile tea by the gallon. Nothing worked. Without her pills, she’d lie awake for hours, mind racing.

Her GP had suggested reflexology almost as an afterthought. Carol was sceptical (“how’s rubbing my feet going to help me sleep?”), but she was desperate enough to give it a go.

MEDICATION REDUCED

From 10mg zopiclone to nothing

SLEEP QUALITY TRANSFORMED

2-3 hours to 7-8 hours naturally

How it’s going

After her first session, Carol slept for six hours straight without medication – something she hadn’t managed in years. By session four, she was sleeping 7-8 hours most nights, naturally. The quality was different too – deeper, more restorative.

She worked with her GP to gradually reduce her zopiclone. Six months after starting reflexology, she was completely off sleeping pills. She now comes fortnightly for maintenance and hasn’t had a prescription refilled in over a year. She’s calmer at work, more patient with her kids, and – in her words – “finally feels like myself again.”

How Reflexology Works

What happens in a session?

Your first visit starts with a proper chat. We want to know what’s going on with you – health issues, stress levels, sleep quality, digestive problems, the works. This helps us tailor treatment to what your body needs most.

Then you lie down (fully clothed except for shoes and socks, obviously), and we get to work. Using thumbs and fingers, we apply pressure to specific reflex points on your feet. Sometimes it’s gentle, sometimes firmer – depends what we find. Tender spots often indicate corresponding areas of tension or imbalance elsewhere in your body.

A full treatment covers both feet systematically, working through all the major reflex zones. We’re checking for areas of tension, granular deposits, or sensitivity – all clues about what’s happening in your body. When we find problem areas, we work them gently until they release.

Most people find it incredibly relaxing. You might feel warmth spreading through your body, tingling sensations, or muscle twitches as things release. Many drift off to sleep – we take it as a compliment. Sessions typically last 45 minutes to an hour.

After treatment, you might feel deeply relaxed, energised, or occasionally a bit emotional. All normal. We’ll usually suggest drinking plenty of water to help flush out toxins. Some people notice immediate improvements; for others it’s more gradual over several sessions.

Common Conditions

What reflexology can help with

The range of conditions that respond to reflexology is genuinely impressive. We regularly see people with:

Stress & Anxiety

Headaches & Migraines

IBS & Digestive Issues

Insomnia

Hormonal Imbalances

Back & Neck Pain

High Blood Pressure

Chronic Fatigue

Reflexology also works brilliantly alongside conventional medical treatment. Cancer patients often use it to manage side effects from chemotherapy. People with diabetes find it helpful for circulation. Those recovering from surgery use it to speed healing.

And honestly? Some people just have it because it feels amazing and they leave feeling better. That’s a perfectly valid reason too.

Expert Reflexology Treatment

Senior Reflexologist

Linda Davies

MAR, ITEC Level 3 Diploma | Member, Association of Reflexologists | 22 Years Experience

Linda’s been practising reflexology for over two decades, and it shows in every treatment. She’s got that rare combination of technical expertise and intuitive understanding – she reads feet like other people read books. Within minutes of starting treatment, she’s usually identified issues you hadn’t even mentioned.

Before becoming a reflexologist, Linda worked as a nurse for 15 years, which gives her a solid grounding in anatomy and pathology. She understands how the body works, what can go wrong, and crucially, when to refer you back to your GP. She’s not trying to replace conventional medicine – she works alongside it.

Linda’s particular areas of interest include hormonal health (she’s brilliant with menopause symptoms), digestive issues, and stress management. She’s also trained in maternity reflexology and regularly treats pregnant women and new mothers. She’s got a wonderfully calm presence that makes even the most stressed clients relax.

Her client list reads like a who’s who of stressed Londoners – lawyers, bankers, creatives, busy parents. Many have been seeing her for years. Some started coming for a specific issue and stayed because they simply feel better when they have regular treatments. Linda’s view? “If something works for you and makes you feel good, why stop?”

“I love reflexology because it gives people time to just be. In London, everyone’s rushing, stressed, never stopping. For an hour, you lie down, someone looks after you, and your body gets a chance to reset. The physical benefits are wonderful, but sometimes the gift of that hour of peace is what people need most.”

What People Say

Chronic IBS

“I’ve had IBS for years and tried every diet, every supplement, every medication. Nothing helped. Started reflexology quite sceptically and noticed a difference after the third session. Six months on, my symptoms are about 70% better. I can actually eat out without panicking about where the nearest loo is. Life-changing.”

— David, Accountant

Stress Management

“I work in banking and my stress levels were off the charts. Was having heart palpitations, couldn’t sleep, constant headaches. My GP suggested reflexology alongside counselling. Linda’s brilliant – I go fortnightly now and it’s the only time I properly switch off. My blood pressure’s come down and I actually sleep through the night.”

— Michael, Investment Banker

Menopause Support

“Menopause was kicking my arse – hot flushes, insomnia, mood swings, the works. Didn’t want to go on HRT straight away so tried reflexology. It’s honestly transformed things. The hot flushes are way less frequent and I’m sleeping properly again. Linda’s a godsend. I recommend her to every woman I know going through this.”

— Sarah, Teacher

Common Questions

Reflexology FAQs

Does reflexology hurt?

Generally no, though some areas might be tender. If we find a reflex point that’s particularly sensitive, it often indicates an issue in the corresponding body part. We adjust pressure accordingly – it should never be unbearable. Some people find the pressure quite firm but not painful; others need a gentler touch. Tell us what works for you and we’ll adapt. Most people find it deeply relaxing rather than uncomfortable.

How many sessions will I need?

Depends what we’re treating and how long you’ve had it. Acute issues often respond quickly – you might notice improvement within 3-4 sessions. Chronic conditions usually need more – perhaps 6-8 sessions before you see significant change. Many people then continue with monthly or fortnightly maintenance sessions. We’ll give you realistic expectations after your first appointment once we’ve assessed your situation.

Is there any scientific evidence for reflexology?

The scientific evidence is mixed, honestly. Some studies show benefits for specific conditions (particularly stress, anxiety, and pain management), whilst others show little difference from placebo. The mechanism by which it works isn’t fully understood by conventional science. That said, thousands of people find it helpful, and research into complementary therapies is improving all the time. We’re upfront about this – reflexology works well for many people, but we can’t guarantee specific outcomes.

Can I have reflexology if I'm pregnant?

Yes, but not in the first trimester. From 14 weeks onwards, reflexology can be wonderfully helpful for pregnancy-related issues – swollen ankles, back pain, stress, sleep problems. Linda’s trained in maternity reflexology and knows which points to avoid and which to focus on depending on your stage of pregnancy. We’d want to know about any complications before treating you, and if you’re high-risk we’d need clearance from your midwife or consultant.

What should I wear to my appointment?

Wear whatever’s comfortable – you’ll be taking off your shoes and socks but staying otherwise fully clothed. Trousers that roll up easily are handy so we can work on your lower legs if needed, but not essential. No need to worry about whether you’ve painted your toenails or if your feet are perfect – we’ve seen it all and honestly don’t care. Just wash them before you come (please).

Can reflexology replace medical treatment?

No, and we’d never suggest it should. Reflexology works brilliantly alongside conventional medicine, but it’s not a replacement for it. If you’ve got a medical condition, keep seeing your doctor. Take your prescribed medication. Reflexology can help manage symptoms and support your body’s healing, but it’s complementary therapy, not alternative medicine. We’ll always refer you back to your GP if we find something concerning.

What if my feet are really ticklish?

We hear this a lot! Actually, reflexology pressure is firm enough that it rarely triggers ticklish responses. It’s light, feathery touch that makes people giggle – we use proper, purposeful pressure. That said, if you are ticklish, tell us and we’ll start with firmer pressure and avoid the really sensitive areas until you’ve settled into treatment. Most people who think they’ll be ticklish are absolutely fine once we start.
