Understanding Cranial Osteopathy
What exactly is cranial osteopathy?
Right, let’s address the elephant in the room. Cranial osteopathy looks like nothing’s happening. Your practitioner places their hands very gently on your head (or baby’s head, or wherever they’re working), applies what feels like virtually no pressure, and… that’s it. You might think they’ve nodded off. It’s so subtle that many people wonder if anything’s actually being done.
Here’s what’s actually going on. Cranial osteopathy is based on the principle that your body – specifically your cranial bones, spine, and sacrum – has a subtle rhythmic movement. Think of it like a very gentle tide. When this rhythm gets disrupted (through birth trauma, injury, stress, or simply life), it can affect how your whole body functions.
Cranial osteopaths are trained to feel these incredibly subtle movements – we’re talking millimetres here – and to gently encourage your body back into its natural rhythm. It’s not about cracking or manipulating; it’s about working with your body’s own healing mechanisms. The touch is so light that babies often fall asleep during treatment.
Does it sound a bit woo-woo? Fair enough. But here’s the thing – it works. We see babies who’ve been screaming for weeks settle down. Adults who’ve had chronic headaches for years get relief. Sleep improves. Digestion sorts itself out. Something’s happening, even if it doesn’t look like much from the outside.
For Babies & Children
Cranial osteopathy for babies
Birth is tough. Not just for mums (though obviously yes, for mums), but for babies too. Being squeezed through a birth canal – or yanked out via forceps or ventouse – can leave babies with residual tension, particularly in the head and neck.
Most babies are absolutely fine and don’t need treatment. But some struggle. They can’t settle. They cry constantly. They won’t feed properly. They only turn their head one way. They arch their back. Parents become exhausted, GP visits yield no answers, and everyone’s at breaking point.
This is where cranial osteopathy often helps enormously. By gently releasing tension in baby’s head, neck, and body, we can help them relax and start functioning better. Treatment is incredibly gentle – you can treat a baby whilst they’re feeding. Many babies sleep through the entire session.
Common issues we see: colic, reflux, feeding difficulties, sleep problems, plagiocephaly (flat head), torticollis (tight neck), general unsettledness. We also work with slightly older children who have glue ear, growing pains, or behavioural issues.
Conditions We Treat
What can cranial osteopathy help with?
The range of conditions that respond to cranial treatment can seem implausibly broad. But remember – we’re not treating the condition directly, we’re helping your body function better so it can sort itself out.
Babies & Infants
Colic, reflux, feeding difficulties, sleep problems, excessive crying, plagiocephaly (flat head syndrome), torticollis, developmental delays.
Children
Glue ear, recurrent ear infections, headaches, growing pains, asthma, behavioural issues, sleep disturbances, aftermath of accidents or falls.
Adults
Headaches, migraines, TMJ problems, sinusitis, stress, anxiety, insomnia, digestive issues, chronic fatigue, post-whiplash syndrome, hormonal imbalances.
Meet Oliver.
He screamed for 14 weeks. Four cranial sessions later, his parents got their life back.
How it started
Oliver’s parents brought him in at 14 weeks, absolutely shattered. They’d barely slept since he was born. He cried constantly – proper screaming, not just grizzling. Nothing helped. Not feeding. Not rocking. Not driving around at 3am (they’d tried that). The health visitor had diagnosed colic and said he’d grow out of it, but they were at breaking point.
Oliver’s birth had been difficult – back-to-back position, long labour, eventually delivered with forceps. His head still had a slightly odd shape from it. He was stiff as anything, always arching his back, couldn’t seem to relax.
CRYING REDUCED
From constant screaming to contented baby
SLEEP IMPROVED
2-hour stretches to 6-hour nights
How it’s going
After the first session, Oliver slept for four hours straight – his longest stretch ever. His mum cried with relief. By session three, he was like a different baby. Still alert and active, but no longer constantly distressed. He could lie on his back without screaming. He actually smiled.
Four sessions in total, and Oliver’s parents had their life back. He still has his moments (he’s a baby, not a robot), but the constant screaming stopped. He feeds well, sleeps in proper stretches, and seems genuinely content. His head shape improved too. Last update we had, he’s a thriving toddler who sleeps through the night. His mum still sends us Christmas cards.
For Adults
Cranial treatment for grown-ups
Cranial osteopathy isn’t just for babies. Adults often find it remarkably effective, particularly for issues that haven’t responded to other treatments.
We see a lot of people with chronic headaches and migraines. Often they’ve tried everything – different glasses, cutting out triggers, various medications. Cranial work can help by releasing tension in the cranial bones and membranes that’s contributing to the problem.
TMJ (jaw) problems respond well too. Grinding your teeth? Clicking jaw? Pain when you eat? Cranial treatment addresses the underlying mechanics rather than just the symptoms.
It’s also brilliant for stress. Not in a “light some candles and think calm thoughts” way, but in a “your nervous system genuinely calms down” way. People often fall asleep during treatment – proper, deep sleep they haven’t managed at home for months.
Some people have regular cranial sessions as maintenance, particularly those in high-stress jobs. Think of it as a nervous system MOT. Prevention rather than cure.
What to Expect
Your first cranial session
First visits last about 45 minutes to an hour. We’ll take a detailed history (or if it’s a baby, we want to know about pregnancy, birth, feeding – everything). Then you (or baby) lie down, fully clothed, and we get to work.
The treatment itself is very gentle. Hands placed on head, sacrum, maybe feet or other areas depending what we find. Very light pressure. You might feel warmth, tingling, or absolutely nothing. All normal. Many people fall asleep.
After treatment, you might feel relaxed, slightly spaced out, or completely normal. Some people get a burst of energy. Others need a nap. Occasionally symptoms get slightly worse before they get better – this is your body processing the treatment.
How many sessions you’ll need depends entirely on the problem and how long you’ve had it. Acute issues in babies often resolve in 2-4 sessions. Chronic adult problems might need more. We’ll be honest about realistic expectations.
Our Specialists
Expert Cranial Osteopaths
Cranial Osteopath & Paediatric Specialist
Dr. Helen Cartwright
BSc (Hons) Ost, DO, Cranial Specialist | 18 Years Experience
Helen is one of those practitioners who just has a gift. She’s been practising cranial osteopathy for 18 years, with particular expertise in treating babies and children. She’s also taught cranial techniques at the British School of Osteopathy and mentored countless other osteopaths.
What makes Helen special is her extraordinary sensitivity. She can feel things in cranial rhythms that most practitioners would miss. Parents often comment that their screaming baby settles within minutes of Helen placing her hands on them – there’s something about her touch that seems to communicate “you’re safe now.”
She’s got three children of her own (now teenagers, which she says is far harder than treating colicky babies), all of whom had cranial treatment from birth. She practices what she preaches. Her clinical areas of interest include birth trauma, plagiocephaly, feeding difficulties, and childhood developmental issues.
Helen’s not just brilliant with babies though. Adults find her incredibly effective for chronic headaches, TMJ problems, and stress-related conditions. She’s got several high-profile clients (actors, musicians) who see her regularly for “nervous system maintenance” as they call it.
“The most rewarding part of my job is seeing a parent’s face when their baby – who’s been screaming for weeks – finally relaxes and falls asleep during treatment. That moment of relief is everything. And knowing I’ve helped that family get their life back is why I do this work.”
Patient Stories
What Our Patients Say
Unsettled Baby
“Our daughter cried non-stop for the first 8 weeks. Nothing worked – we were at our wits’ end. One session with Helen and she slept for 4 hours straight. By the third session she was a different baby. We genuinely don’t know how we’d have coped without this treatment. Worth every single penny.”
— Tom & Sarah, New Parents
Chronic Migraines
“I’ve had migraines since my teens. Tried everything – different medications, cutting out triggers, Botox, the lot. Started having regular cranial sessions six months ago and my migraine frequency has dropped by about 70%. The ones I do get are less severe. First time in 20 years I’ve felt properly in control of them.”
— Rebecca, Marketing Director
Jaw Problems
“My jaw had been clicking and painful for years. Dentist said I was grinding my teeth at night and gave me a mouth guard which helped a bit but didn’t solve it. Helen worked on my head and jaw over a few sessions and the clicking stopped. I can eat without pain now and I’m not waking up with tension headaches anymore.”

Common Questions
Cranial Osteopathy FAQs
Is cranial osteopathy scientifically proven?
This is the question everyone wants to ask but feels awkward about. Honest answer: the research evidence is mixed. Some studies show benefits, others don’t. The mechanism by which it works isn’t fully understood by conventional science. That said, we see it work every single day. Babies who’ve been screaming for weeks settle. Chronic headaches improve. TMJ pain resolves. Something’s happening, even if we can’t fully explain it yet. Many GPs and health visitors now refer patients for cranial treatment because they’ve seen the results themselves.
Is it safe for newborn babies?
Yes, absolutely. The touch is incredibly gentle – think of it as about the weight of a £1 coin. We can treat babies from just a few days old (once they’ve had their postnatal check-up and been given the all-clear). Treatment often helps babies who are struggling after difficult births, but it’s also suitable for babies who had straightforward births and are just a bit unsettled. Many babies sleep through the entire session.
How many sessions will I need?
Depends entirely on what we’re treating and how long you’ve had it. Babies with acute issues (colic, feeding difficulties) often see improvement within 2-4 sessions. Chronic adult conditions typically need more – maybe 4-6 sessions initially, then occasional maintenance. We’ll give you realistic expectations after your first session once we’ve assessed what’s going on. We’re not trying to string you along for endless appointments – we want to get you better as efficiently as possible.
Does it hurt?
No. The pressure is so light that most people can barely feel it. It’s nothing like manipulation or massage – there’s no cracking, no deep pressure, no discomfort. Many people find it deeply relaxing and fall asleep during treatment. Babies almost never cry during sessions (unless they’re hungry or need changing – we’re not miracle workers). Occasionally you might feel emotional releases during or after treatment, which can be a bit disconcerting but is actually a good sign that tension’s being released.
Can I have cranial treatment if I've had surgery or metal plates in my skull?
Usually yes, though we need to know about it beforehand. Previous surgery or metal plates don’t prevent cranial treatment, but we’ll adapt our approach accordingly. Same goes for any other medical conditions – always tell us about anything relevant. If we’re not sure treatment’s appropriate, we’ll refer you back to your GP or consultant for clearance before proceeding.
What's the difference between cranial osteopathy and craniosacral therapy?
Good question, and one that confuses a lot of people. Both are gentle, hands-on treatments working with cranial rhythms. The main difference is training. Cranial osteopaths are fully qualified osteopaths who’ve done additional specialist training in cranial techniques. Craniosacral therapists may have various levels of training but aren’t necessarily osteopaths. We’re not saying one’s better than the other – just that they’re different qualifications. Our practitioners are registered osteopaths with extensive cranial training.
My baby is tongue-tied – can cranial help?
Cranial osteopathy can help with some of the knock-on effects of tongue-tie (tension in jaw, neck, and head from compensating), but it can’t release the tie itself – that needs to be done by a specialist. If tongue-tie is affecting feeding, get it assessed and possibly divided first, then cranial treatment afterwards can help everything settle down and function better. We work alongside tongue-tie specialists regularly and can recommend good ones if needed.
