What is Sports Massage?

Therapeutic Massage for Active Bodies

Sports massage isn’t just for elite athletes – though plenty of professionals trust us with their bodies. It’s a specialised form of deep tissue work designed for anyone who moves. Whether you’re pounding pavements in your lunch hour, hitting the gym after work, or simply dealing with the physical demands of everyday life in London, sports massage can help you feel better and perform stronger.

Unlike a relaxation massage at a spa, sports massage is more focused and clinical. We’re not here to make you feel drowsy – we’re here to sort out the knots, release tension, improve flexibility, and get your muscles working properly again. That might mean addressing a specific injury, preparing your body for an upcoming event, or helping you recover faster after training.

The techniques we use – deep tissue work, trigger point therapy, myofascial release, and stretching – are all evidence-based approaches that target the root cause of muscular problems rather than just offering temporary relief. Yes, it can be intense. But the results? Worth every minute.

Performance Enhancement

Boost your athletic performance

Sports massage has been proven to help increase muscle flexibility and joint range of movement. Better flexibility means better performance – whether that’s shaving seconds off your 5K time, adding kilos to your deadlift, or simply being able to touch your toes without wincing.

Regular sessions help identify and address tight spots before they become injuries. Think of it as preventative maintenance for your body – far cheaper (and less painful) than fixing something once it’s broken.

Many of our clients see sports massage as essential to their training plan, not a luxury. They book in before big events to ensure their muscles are firing properly, and afterwards to speed recovery and reduce delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS).

Treatment Benefits

Why Choose Sports Massage?

From weekend warriors to office workers with tight shoulders, sports massage offers targeted relief and genuine improvements in how your body moves and feels.

Pre-Event Preparation

Get your muscles primed and ready. Pre-event massage focuses on warming up tissue, increasing circulation, and ensuring everything’s firing properly before you compete or train.

Faster Recovery

Post-training massage helps flush out metabolic waste, reduces muscle soreness, and speeds up recovery time so you can get back to training sooner.

Injury Treatment

Dealing with a niggle? Sports massage addresses strains, tears, and overuse injuries through targeted work on affected areas to promote healing and restore function.

Meet James.

He went from chronic back pain to deadlifting 180kg.

PAIN-FREE MOVEMENT

Zero back pain for 18 months

STRENGTH GAINS

From 120kg to 180kg deadlift

How it started

James came to see us after his GP told him he’d “just have to live with” chronic lower back pain. At 34, he’d already given up football, stopped going to the gym, and was struggling to sit through his commute without discomfort. He’d been relying on painkillers for months, and was starting to worry this was his new normal.

The pain had started gradually – typical of overuse injuries – and had progressively worsened. His hamstrings were tight as drum skins, his glutes weren’t activating properly, and his lower back was compensating for everything. Not exactly a recipe for a pain-free life.

How it’s going

After an initial intensive phase of weekly sports massage combined with targeted stretching exercises, James started seeing improvements within three weeks. The constant ache disappeared first, then the sharp pains on movement. By session six, he was back in the gym – cautiously at first, then with growing confidence.

Eighteen months later, he’s not just pain-free – he’s stronger than he’s ever been. He books in for maintenance sessions every 4-6 weeks, has added 60kg to his deadlift, and recently signed up for a triathlon. As he puts it: “I thought I’d have to manage back pain for the rest of my life. Now I forget I ever had it.”

Treatment Techniques

What happens in a session?

Sports massage draws on a range of techniques, all tailored to what your body needs on that particular day. We’re not following a script – we’re responding to what we find when we assess your muscles and movement patterns.

Deep tissue work gets into those layers of muscle that a relaxation massage can’t touch. It’s targeted pressure that addresses chronic tension and breaks down adhesions.

Trigger point therapy focuses on those spots that feel like little knots – areas of hyperirritability in muscle that refer pain elsewhere. Ever had someone press on your shoulder and felt it in your neck? That’s a trigger point.

Myofascial release addresses the connective tissue that wraps around everything. When fascia gets tight or restricted, it limits movement and causes discomfort. This technique uses sustained pressure to release those restrictions.

Stretching and mobilisation help restore normal movement patterns and improve flexibility. We might do this passively (we move your limbs for you) or actively (you do the work whilst we provide resistance).

Will it hurt?

The honest truth about sports massage

Let’s not sugar-coat it: sports massage isn’t always comfortable. But there’s a world of difference between therapeutic discomfort and pain. Good sports massage should feel like a “hurts so good” sensation – intense, yes, but in a way that makes you think “that’s exactly the spot.”

If you’re tensing up and holding your breath, that’s too much. Your therapist will constantly check in with you, and you should always feel comfortable saying if the pressure needs adjusting. Remember: we’re trying to help your muscles relax, not batter them into submission.

You might feel a bit sore the next day – similar to post-workout soreness – but this should fade within 24-48 hours. Actually, many clients report feeling significantly better immediately after treatment, with improved range of motion and reduced pain.

Sarah Mitchell

BTEC Level 5 Sports Massage | Advanced Soft Tissue Therapy

Sarah has been practising sports massage for over 12 years, working with everyone from Premier League footballers to weekend park runners. Before specialising in sports massage, she spent five years as a physiotherapy assistant, which gave her a solid grounding in anatomy, injury rehabilitation, and movement assessment.

What sets Sarah apart is her ability to explain exactly what’s going on in your body. She won’t just work on your symptoms – she’ll help you understand why they’re happening and what you can do between sessions to maintain the improvements. Her treatment room is plastered with thank-you cards from clients who’d been told to “just rest” by their GPs, only to get back to their sport within weeks of working with her.

Sarah has additional qualifications in kinesiology taping, dry needling, and sports nutrition. She’s also a keen runner herself (though she’ll be the first to admit she’s better at fixing running injuries than preventing her own). She ran London Marathon in 2022 and is currently training for an ultra.

“I absolutely love what I do. There’s nothing quite like seeing someone walk out of the clinic standing taller, moving better, and feeling hopeful about getting back to the activities they love. That never gets old.”

What Our Clients Say

Marathon Training

“Sarah sorted out my IT band issues that had been plaguing me for months. I’d tried stretching, foam rolling, everything – nothing worked. Three sessions with her and I was back running pain-free. She also gave me exercises to stop it coming back. Absolute game-changer.”

— Tom, Runner

Desk Job Recovery

“I work in tech and spend far too many hours hunched over a laptop. The tension in my neck and shoulders was unbearable. After just one session I felt about 70% better. Now I go monthly and it’s the only thing keeping me sane. Sarah knows exactly where to dig in – yes it hurts a bit, but in the best possible way.”

— Lisa, Software Developer

Sports Injury Recovery

“Tore my hamstring playing football and thought my season was over. Sarah worked with my physio and got me back on the pitch in half the time they’d estimated. Her knowledge of sports injuries is incredible – she explained everything so clearly and gave me realistic timescales. Couldn’t recommend her enough.”

— Marcus, Amateur Footballer

Frequently Asked Questions

Your Questions Answered

How is sports massage different from normal massage?

Sports massage is more targeted and clinical than your typical spa massage. Whilst relaxation massage uses gentle, flowing strokes designed to help you drift off, sports massage employs deeper pressure and specific techniques to address muscular problems, improve flexibility, and enhance performance. We’re working on particular areas of tension or injury rather than giving you a head-to-toe relaxation experience. Think of it as physiotherapy’s hands-on cousin – therapeutic rather than purely relaxing (though many clients do find it deeply satisfying once they’re used to it).

Do I need to be an athlete to benefit from sports massage?

Absolutely not. Despite the name, sports massage isn’t just for athletes. Yes, we work with plenty of runners, cyclists, and gym-goers, but we also see office workers with tight shoulders, parents carrying toddlers around, gardeners with aching backs, and anyone else dealing with muscular tension or pain. If you’ve got muscles (which, last time we checked, everyone does), you can benefit from sports massage. The techniques we use are effective for anyone with soft tissue problems, regardless of whether you’ve ever set foot in a gym.

How often should I have sports massage?

This depends entirely on what you’re trying to achieve. If you’re dealing with an acute injury or severe tension, you might benefit from weekly sessions initially. For general maintenance and injury prevention, most people find monthly or fortnightly sessions work well. Athletes in heavy training often come weekly or fortnightly. We’ll discuss a treatment plan during your first session based on your specific situation, goals, and budget. And no, we won’t pressure you into booking more sessions than you need – we’d rather see you when you actually need treatment than have you turn up out of obligation.

What should I wear to my appointment?

Wear whatever you’re comfortable in. Sports massage is usually done with you in your underwear (we’ll provide towels to cover areas we’re not working on), but you can keep as much clothing on as you like. Some people prefer to wear shorts and a sports bra or vest. We need access to the areas we’re treating, so if we’re working on your back, you’ll need to remove your top, but we’re not precious about the rest. Just avoid wearing your best underwear – massage oil can occasionally transfer onto fabric despite our best efforts.

Will I be sore after treatment?

You might experience some soreness 24-48 hours after treatment, similar to post-exercise muscle soreness (DOMS). This is normal and indicates that we’ve worked deep enough to create change in the tissue. It shouldn’t be severe – more of a “I’ve done a workout” feeling than actual pain. Drinking plenty of water after your session and doing any stretches we’ve given you will help minimise soreness. If you’re particularly sore or bruised after treatment, let us know next time so we can adjust our pressure.

Can sports massage help prevent injuries?

Yes, this is one of the primary reasons people have regular sports massage. By maintaining good muscle flexibility, addressing areas of tightness before they become problems, and identifying movement imbalances, sports massage can significantly reduce your injury risk. Many of our regular clients say they rarely get injured now they’re having maintenance sessions, whereas they used to pick up niggles constantly. Think of it like servicing your car – you’re far less likely to break down if you’re getting regular maintenance rather than waiting until something goes wrong.

When should I avoid sports massage?

Don’t book in if you’ve got a fever, acute infection, or are generally unwell. Sports massage isn’t suitable for certain skin conditions, over areas of undiagnosed lumps or bumps, or during the acute phase of injury (roughly the first 48-72 hours when there’s inflammation and swelling). If you’ve got any medical conditions, are pregnant, or are on certain medications, mention this when you book so we can advise whether treatment is appropriate. When in doubt, give us a call and we can discuss your specific situation.
